Photostatic copy of a portion of a petition presented by Henri de Tonti and François Dauphin de La Forest to Jérôme Phélypeaux, comte de Pontchartrain, around 1699. In an effort to join the Illinois fur trade, Tonti and La Forest remind Pontchartrain of their services to La Salle during his journey to Canada twenty years ago and ask that they allowed to return to Canada with the men and equipment necessary for their subsistence.

Henri de Tonti was an Italian-born soldier, explorer, and fur trader in the service of France. Born near Gaeta, Italy, he joined the French army in 1668 and later served in the French navy. Tonti lost his right hand in a grenade explosion during the Sicilian wars and from that time on wore a prosthetic hook covered by a glove.
